Virgin Atlantic and British Airways (BA) have announced cuts to their fuel surcharges as a reaction to the drop in world oil prices.
Effective from yesterday, BA has trimmed £35 from first and club services on long-haul flights of nine hours or more. Long-haul economy class passengers will see an average reduction in fuel surcharge from £192 to £132, while those on medium-haul flights of less than nine hours will have a reduction from £136 to £106.
Surcharges levied to premium economy travellers on long-haul services will drop from £230 to £170 with medium haul routes dropping from £166 to £126.
Virgin Atlantic has matched BA's cut by also implementing a £35 reduction for its upper class passengers on long-haul flights. The carrier has also exactly mirrored BA's cuts for economy class passengers on both long and medium-haul services. Equally, both airlines will trim business class surcharges from £266 to £196 on long-haul and from £196 to £156 on medium haul routes.
BA stated that "the reduction in the price of oil", which now stands at around $36.50 per barrel, was the chief motivating factor for this new pricing policy. The two airlines first introduced fuel surcharges on return flights in May 2004, at a time when oil was also priced at $36.50 a barrel.
Since then, fuel surcharges have increased by up to 5,000 per cent at some airlines as the price of oil climbed to a high of $150 per barrel. It is estimated that the high price of oil led to the collapse of over 30 airlines, including Zoom and XL Airways, but the greatest threat is now said to be the decline in passenger demand.
Pakistan travellers still waiting news from Pakistani Airlines PIA and Airblue for fuel surcharge cut.

The proposed new national identity (ID) cards will be tested at two of the UK's leading national airports, according to reports. An 18-month trial will go ahead at London City and Manchester airports under the Home Office's delivery plan for the ID cards.
The biometric cards will be issued to airside workers at the airports during the second half of 2009 as part of an evaluation period. The National Identity Scheme Delivery Plan was revealed on 6 March outlining the details of the estimated £4.7 billion project which will run for the next ten years, reports the BBC.
"The first ID cards will be issued to people working in specific sensitive roles or locations where verification of identity will enhance the protection of the public," said the Home Office plan.
"This will start in the second half of 2009, with the issuing of identity cards to those working airside in the country's airports," it added. Marriage visa holders and non-EU students will be the first group to receive ID cards, followed by workers at the airports before the scheme is opened up on a voluntary basis in 2010.
However, the Home Office originally intended to have around 200,000 airport workers in the UK holding the cards, which carry fingerprint data, by the middle of 2009.
Phil Booth from campaign group, No 2 ID, described this to the BBC as a "complete roll back" of the original trial proposed by government. "We are seeing a rather transparent attempt, I think, to save some ministerial face," he added.
The British Air Transport Association (BATA) has also objected to the scheme by describing it to Reuters as "half baked".
After bomb attack on the Marriott hotel in the Pakistani capital Islamabad a BA spokeswoman said flights to Islamabad on Sunday and Tuesday have been cancelled, while services scheduled for later in the week were still under review.
The safety of BA staff and aircraft were of "paramount importance", a BA spokeswoman said.

IATA launched a new era in air travel as it bid farewell to the paper ticket as the industry converted to 100% electronic ticketing on 1 June.
“The paper ticket has served us well, but its time is over” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO at a ceremony held in Istanbul, Turkey on 31 May.Paper tickets were introduced in the 1920s. More than 70 years later, the first e-ticket was issued in 1994. In 2004, the successive crises of war, terrorism and SARS were still being felt, the price of oil was rising and it became critical for airlines to cut costs.
IATA launched Simplifying the Business, a programme that would achieve 100% e-ticketing.“The benefits to the business are real,” said Bisignani. “The move to electronic ticketing will save the industry over US$3 billion each year.” And e-ticketing brings a number of additional benefits to travellers:
no more lost tickets.
No more waiting by the mailbox for your paper ticket and
changing itineraries is much simpler.
The environmentally conscious might ask what is happening to all the paper that was in the system. IATA is collecting the remaining unused paper tickets - some 32 million worldwide - to be securely reclaimed, destroyed and recycled. “An era has ended. If you have a paper ticket, it’s time to donate it to a museum,” Bisignani said.
Accroding to IATA rules all Pakistani Airline e.g. PIA and Airblue issue only e-tickets.
Independence of Pakistan:: These first two weeks of August 1947 , thousand of Muslims gave their life’s for Pakistan , I like to salute all Ghazi and Shaheed.
Sharjah authorities have withheld permission for private airline Airblue to operate scheduled flights from Pakistan to the state, just days before the launch of the service on August 14.
The decision has been taken to pressurise the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Pakistan to allow more flights to Sharjah’s national carrier Air Arabia, industry officials told Ontime Travel on Tuesday.“We had over 1,000 passengers booked and ticketed,” a dejected Airblue official said. “Besides financial losses, this episode will badly affect our credibility.”
Airblue had recently added two Airbus-319 aircraft, which were to be used on routes between northern Pakistan and Sharjah.Flights have been withheld by General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of Sharjah on grounds of ‘pending discussion’ with Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), an official close to the negotiation said. “Pending discussion basically implies to Air Arabia’s endeavor to seek more flights to the country,” he added.Air Arabia presently operates seven flights a week between the two countries, whereas none of the three Pakistani carriers are operating to Sharjah.
The case has brought fore the disadvantageous position of Pakistani airlines, which are losing their own market to Gulf carriers, an aviation expert commented. “They are taking all our passengers to Europe and onwards to US,” he said, adding that in return Pakistani airlines mostly operate on point-to-point basis. He said CAA should take a hard stand on the issue and stop flights of Air Arabia unless the Sharjah authorities allow Air Blue to start operations. However, none of the officials of CAA, which has claimed reaching milestones by attracting foreign carriers, were available for comment.
Air Blue had also been denied more flights to Dubai. It was supposed to operate 14 weekly flights to Sharjah from Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Faisalabad.Shalini Rajan, Air Arabia’s Regional Manager for Pakistan, said she was out of station and can not comment until next week.

Airblue, Pakistan’s largest private carrier, will start flying twice a day from Sharjah to Pakistan in the first phase of the airline’s plan to expand services in the Gulf and South Asia. The airline will operate its two newly acquired Airbus A319s to two destinations in northern Pakistan, beginning on Aug 14.
“The plans are to fly to two of the four northern destinations in Pakistan, including Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad or Peshawar,” said Syed Nasir Ali, the managing director of Airblue. “Two destinations will be finalised once all the approvals have been secured from Sharjah aviation authorities.”
The 14 flights a week from Sharjah will take the total number of Airblue flights from the UAE to 35 a week. The airline currently operates 21 flights a week from Dubai to four destinations in Pakistan, and is also looking to expand its service from Dubai.
Mr Ali said last month that the airline had held negotiations with Abu Dhabi authorities and planned to launch flights from the emirate to Peshawar and Islamabad “soon”. He added that Airblue would introduce flights to Muscat, in Oman, and to Kuwait in October as the second phase of the airline’s expansion got under way. Airblue has already secured landing rights in Muscat and is in the final stages of negotiating for rights in Kuwait. “We are also looking at the possibility of starting Jeddah operations to get a share of Hajj and Ummrah traffic,” Mr Ali said.
Airblue has also set its sights on the Indian market and has secured approval from the Indian and Pakistani authorities to start flights between Lahore and Delhi this winter. Airblue plans to announce an initial public offering of shares next year to fund 14 new A320 Airbus aircraft worth about US$800 million (Dh2.94bn). Mr Ali, however, would not say how much the airline intended to raise, or what stake of the company it would offer. “We are at the planning stage right now and a decision will soon be made,” he said, adding that the airline would complete three years of operations in August, the prerequisite for a public offering in Pakistan. Counting the two A319 aircraft that Airblue recently added, the carrier currently has a fleet of eight Airbus aeroplanes . From the middle of next year, Airblue is scheduled to receive a new Airbus aircraft every three months. “We will have about 18 aircraft once we get the full delivery. We will phase out the older aircraft as well,” Mr Ali said. He added that Airblue was also looking at the option of acquiring a wide-bodied aircraft, possibly an A330, to service its long-haul route to Europe. “With the addition of these new aircraft to the fleet, Airblue will expand operations to more European destinations, including London, Scandinavia and also more destinations in the Middle East, Far East and Saudi Arabia,” he said.
PIA, by reducing sale commission of travel agents, will have to face another huge loss as the travel agents generating more than Rs4b revenue per month to the airline would stop sale of its tickets and will prefer to sale the tickets of the airlines paying them more percentage, said a senior travel agent on the condition of anonymity. He said that PIA and other airlines Ittehad, Qatar and Emirates have also issued notices to the travel agents to inform them that the said airlines have reduced their commission from 9pc to 5pc on the sale of international tickets.“It is not a wise decision” he said and termed the decision a conspiracy against PIA hatched by some other private airlines. He claimed that with such measures taken by the management of the airline, the travel agents association of Pakistan would go on strike and its members would stop sale of the tickets of PIA, which would lead to a heavy loss to the airline. He said that there are more than 80 travel agents in Lahore only who contribute Rs4 billion per month against the sale of tickets to PIA only and with stoppage of the sale the airline would lose this amount. Travel agents would prefer to sale the tickets of those airlines who would offer them more percentage against sale.Another travel agent said that PIA has copied the strategy of Airblue who has asked its travel agents to deposit their amounts in advance and has collected a reasonable amount in this head. After that, the airline has purchased two airbuses but its sale now has declined rapidly. He said that other airlines in alliance with PIA in this regard could violate the agreement and right after a week, they could meet the travel agents in groups and assured them for the payment of full commission underhand. He said that it was very poor logic of the management of PIA to reduce commission of the travel agents only to pull the airline from crisis and losses. He said that there were so many other quarters within the airline which could be redressed to reduce the loss of PIA and reducing commission of travel agents would bring no extraordinary results for the management. When contacted Tariq Ismail, District Manger PIA, said that the step was taken only to reduce the losses of airline and reduction of 5 per cent in the commission of travel agents would somehow help PIA to upgrade its financial position.
